New Utility Service Accounts
To set up a new utility account, contact the Utility Services
office at 129 N 2nd St, Yakima, WA, 98901, or call us at (509)
575-6080. Our office hours are 8-6, Monday through Friday.
Usually, a utility account can be set up and the water turned
on the same day. Depending on where you live, your utility
account with the City may include domestic water, sewer, refuse,
irrigation, or any combination thereof.
New Federal Regulations require identification when opening an utility account. Please have your Drivers License information available when calling.
Deposits
New accounts that are in the property owners name do not
require a deposit. Accounts in a tenants name, do require
a security deposit. The amount of the deposit varies according
to the utilities available at the address. The most common
deposit, for water, sewer, and refuse service is $148.95.
We ask that ½ ($74.48) be paid immediately and the balance
within two weeks. We are unable to include the deposit on
the utility bills.
In certain cases, the utility deposit can be waived:
- Previous Service- If you previously had utility service
with the City of Yakima for a period of 12 months, with
no more than one suspension notice in that period, the deposit
can be waived.
- Letter of Credit from a previous utility -
If you can provide an acceptable letter of credit from your
previous utility company, the deposit can be waived. The
City will accept letters of credit from the following types
of utilities:
Water Districts
Sewer Districts
Refuse Companies
Electric Companies
Natural Gas Companies
Telephone Companies
Cellular Phone Companies
Cable TV Companies
If the previous utility will fax a letter of credit
containing payment history for a period of 12 months,
with no more than one suspension in a twelve month period,
the deposit can be waived. The fax number for the Utility
Services Division is (509) 576-6663.
Deposits are returned after one year of good payment history.
Unless otherwise requested, the deposit is applied to the
utility account. At the customer's request, a check for the
deposit can be sent directly to the customer. To view specific
Ordinances regarding deposits, see City Ordinances below.
