On Sept. 9, 2005, the first ever William
O. Douglas Trail hike will occur. This is a 75-mile
continuous hiking route linking Yakima to Mt. Rainier,
crossing through 12 different ecosystems with tremendous
biodiversity. Over 90% of the trail route utilizes existing
public trails, pathways, and public lands. Along the
trail there will be multiple sites for historic, natural,
and cultural interpretation. Over a five-day period,
the group will walk in the footsteps of the late U.S.
Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, who grew up
in Yakima and who, through hiking the hills and mountains
around Yakima, overcame the twin challenges of poverty
and polio. Hike the entire 75 miles with us or only
part of the distance. Please bring appropriate hiking/camping
gear and your own supplies (you can easily buy food,
etc., in Yakima). To participate in this hike, please
meet at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, at Davis High
School in front of the statute of William O. Douglas
(South 6th Avenue and Walnut in Yakima). To sign up
or get more information, contact Karen Wayenberg by
phone (509) 575-3005 or e-mail kwayenbe@ci.yakima.wa.us.
