"Message From The Mayor"
After having grown up in Yakima, I had the privilege of playing professional
baseball and got to see many other cities and towns throughout the nation. When my
playing days were over, my wife and I had to decide where we wanted to settle and where
we wanted to raise our family.
We chose Yakima. We chose to come home.
I believe that Yakima is the best place in the world to live, work, and
play. Yakima is blessed with a mild climate, an increasingly diverse
economy, and an abundance of activities.
The Yakima Valley is known by many as one of the most productive
agricultural regions on earth. Many people around the world know Yakima
as the "Fruit Bowl of the Nation" because of the high-quality apples,
cherries, pears, and other produce that thrives in the fertile soil of our
valley. Others know Yakima as the place where more than 75% of the hops
grown in the U.S. come from. Still others know about our area because of
the mint fields, dairy farms, and vineyards that stretch from one end of
the Yakima Valley to the other.
While agriculture is the engine that drives Yakima's economy, our area
is also home to leading international manufacturers like Shields Bag &
Printing, Smith Aerospace, Kwik Lock (inventor of the bread tie), Marq
Packaging, and Western RV.
Tourism is the fastest growing element of our economy.
Yakima is the preferred spot in Washington State for conferences,
conventions, and other gatherings that fill the state-of-the-art Yakima
Convention Center year 'round.
Yakima's reputation as the premiere host of high school sports
championships continues to grow as athletes and fans regularly pack the
one-of-a-kind Yakima Valley Sundome, the unique Yakima County Stadium, and
any one of the many other outstanding venues in our area.
The Yakima Bears (professional baseball) and the Yakama SunKings
(professional basketball) add to Yakima's rich sports heritage.
Yakima is also the regional hub for healthcare, finance, higher
education, culture, and local, state, and federal agency services.
With a population over 80,000, Yakima offers the amenities of a big city
while retaining its small town charm.
Yakima is all this and more. Yakima is, "The Heart of Central
Washington!"
